How are vehicle tax rates calculated?

The cost of taxing a vehicle is calculated differently depending on the age and type of the vehicle. Car tax rates may be based on engine size, fuel type and emissions or other factors depending on when they were first registered.

How do I check the cost of taxing my vehicle?

Enter the vehicle registration to check the annual cost of taxing the vehicle. Our free car check provides many data fields for UK vehicles including the cost of taxing the vehicle for 6 or 12 months.

Why does the tax cost for my vehicle show as ā€œNot Availableā€?

For some vehicles, there isnā€™t enough data available to calculate the tax rate. Alternatively, you can check the vehicle tax rates table to calculate how much the tax will cost for your vehicle.

What is the additional tax rate shown on the report?

Vehicles with an original list price of more than Ā£40,000 require an additional payment of Ā£335 per year for 5 years. This doesnā€™t include the first time the vehicle is taxed. You can check the vehicle tax rates table for additional information.

How do I check if my vehicle has an additional tax rate?

Enter the registration to check if your vehicle requires an additional payment of Ā£335 a year. If youā€™re buying a vehicle under 5 years old, you can also check the list price with your dealer.

How accurate are the tax rates displayed?

The tax rate is estimated based on the vehicle data provided by the DVLA. Before purchasing a vehicle, you should confirm the car tax estimate is correct by speaking to the current owner or the DVLA.

Vehicles registered from April 2017

Vehicles registered on or after this date attract a first tax payment based on the CO2 emissions produced by the vehicle. This also applies to other vehicles, for example some motorhomes.

There is also a higher rate for diesel vehicles with donā€™t meet the RDE2 standard.

The first payment will cover the vehicle tax for 12 months. After this time, there is a different rate based on the fuel type of the vehicle. The tax rate varies depending on if the vehicle is petrol or diesel, electric or alternative (for example hybrid vehicles).

Vehicles with an original list price of more than Ā£40,000 will also attract an additional rate of Ā£335 per year for 5 years.

You can check CO2 emissions using the free car check service, or by looking at the V5C registration document for the vehicle.

You can check the tax cost of a vehicle by entering the registration. For vehicles which show ā€œNot Availableā€, you can also calculate the tax rate using the tax rates for vehicles registered before 2001 table.

Vehicles registered before March 2001

Vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 are taxed based on the engine size. The tax rate is different for vehicles with an engine size above or below 1549cc.

You can check the engine size of a vehicle by using the free car check service.

Motorhomes

Motorhome tax rates are calculated based on the gross weight and engine size of the vehicle.

Motorhomes which were registered after April 2017 have a different rate of tax if they are in the M1SP category or have CO2 emissions which are included on the type approval certificate.

You should check the tax rates for motorhomes table for further information.

Other vehicles

Other vehicles, for example, goods vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles are taxed at different rates. More information is available at the other vehicle tax rates table.
